Speaking Truths & Shattering Leadership Myths

I had the opportunity to step onto the stage as keynote speaker at a private conference for a large San Francisco-based company. I have spoken, taught, and led many times, generally representing companies I’ve worked for. I love it! I also enjoy being able to carefully craft a message of vision, teach to inspire, and engage an audience to take action.

This time, I was requested to speak on the topic of leaders investing in their own self care so they can become better leaders for their teams and clients. That was a first. I was impressed with the company's acknowledgment that their leaders were feeling depleted and overworked. This company dedicated two days of workshops, sessions, and training to give their teams the skills, tools, and resources to become renewed and energized. 2025 is a big year for them and they understood that it sat on the shoulders of their leadership. I was honored to do my part and understood the assignment.

I have yet to meet a for profit company that isn’t trying to make money or grow their sales. That is the goal, but it’s also important to remember the team that you chose on the journey to reach that goal. The team's health is critical to a company's success.

If you are in the position to make impact in your company remember these three key insights:

  • If you want better revenue outcomes or service goals, be proactive and have your company invest in their leadership. The key to unlock revenue is not just the strategy but the people that you chose to execute it.

  • Treat your clients well and treat your employees better. It's a funnel. If you pour into your team the expertise and give them the skills and space to grow, that translates to how they work with your clients and build an exceptional product.

  • Managers can’t just say wellness is important, they have to demonstrate it. Don't tell them to take a week's vacation, but their manager never does, or if they do, they’re working instead of enjoying their time off. Model the behavior and make it crystal clear for everyone.

It’s clear that I have lots of thoughts on this topic because revenue and leadership are connected. I was able to talk about this in depth with a dear friend, Katie Ceccarini, who runs Endurance Management Coaching. She shared her insights on the investment and value of how growth is happening. We couldn’t stop talking so we decided to press record and share it with others here.

We discussed:

  • Debunking the business myths and if it’s possible to do more with less

  • Why some companies scale headcount but not results

  • If psychological safety making teams soft

  • The importance of investing in your people in the age of AI

You can hear the full conversation, and then DM me and tell me what your experience is or what you would like to hear more of. Ultimately, I believe that if you have a healthy, growing business it's a win win.

It means:

  • A problem in our lives is being solved by a great product.

  • A company is employing amazing people

  • Money is stimulating the economy, which benefits everyone

  • An entrepreneur is happy to see that they are adding value to the world.

Call me an optimist but from where I sit as an advisor, that is an important value to have in order to help companies see their potential.

Until next month, shout out a woman and let her know how amazing she is. She just may be in your family.
